Arcola School raised $3,322.25 for the Terry Fox Foundation when the school participated in its annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 28. With more money coming in daily, it is obvious that the 31st year for the event was a real success.
Beginning at 12:55 p.m., the school invited students, staff, parents and community members to take part in the run to commemorate the Canadian hero.
Approximately 110 high school students loaded the bus and headed down the old highway to Armilla Road with high school organizer Cathy Burton. By the time the students returned to the school, they had walked or run a solid nine kilometers.
While the high school student headed out of town, the elementary students took to the school race track. Walking outside, the kids were all smiles as their teachers explained how exactly the run would take place.
Students wore cards around their necks to track the number of times they made it around the track. Organized by Karyse Nobert, this extra incentive was an obvious winner as huge grins donned the faces of the elementary students as they raced around the track.
Principal Kevin Hengen believes these types of events are importance for the development of well-rounded students. Not only does it provide funds for a great cause, but it gives the students an opportunity to give back. "It is important to give high school students an opportunity to understand the important of volunteering their time to a cause that may not directly impact them," said Hengen. "We hope it helps them learn the importance of giving back to their community."
