The adjudicators for the 2011 Weyburn Rotary Music Festival have been determined. The dates of the annual festival will be Mar. 7 to 12 for the piano competition, Mar. 13 to 16 for the vocal competition, and Mar. 16 to 18 for the band competition.
Adjudicating the piano competitions will be Janis Smith, who was trained with the Sisters of St. Ursuline in Engelfeld, Sask. Smith received her Associateship in Piano Teaching from the Royal Conservatory of Music and her Licentiate in Piano Teaching from Trinity College of London.
Smith has served on the executive of the Regina Musical Club, Art School Sask. and on the Board for Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC). She is a member-at-large of the Sask. Registered Music Teachers' Association.
Adjudicating vocal competitions will be Karen Charlton, who has been very successful in competitions, including winning the National Rozsa competition in Calgary, Alta., and the voice category at the National Music Festival in 2002.
Charlton has been featured on CBC Radio and has appeared as a soprano soloist with the Saskatoon Symphony many times. Karen's most recent performance was with the Saskatoon Opera Association in 2009, where she performed Musetta in their production of La Boheme.
Adjudicating band competitions will be Scott Adelman, originally from Moose Jaw, and from 1999 to 2005, he taught band at Weyburn Junior High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan as a trumpet major in 1995.
Adelman teaches regularly at the Saskatchewan Summer Band Camps as a clinician and conductor. As well, he has been on the board of the Saskatchewan Band Association for six years, serving the roles of vice-president, secretary, and chairman of Summer Band Camps. Currently, Scott is employed in his fifth year with the Regina Catholic School Division.
The festival entries deadline was Jan. 20, and no late entries will be accepted.
