The Estevan Chamber of Commerce elected a new president during its annual general meeting Wednesday morning.
The meeting was held via a conference call due to crowd size restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty-three people were present for the call.
The chamber was able to review its audited financial statements and elected its new executive for 2020.
Michael Dunne, the manager of mortgage specialists for rural Saskatchewan with RBC Royal Bank, is the new chamber president. He said that it’s important for the chamber to take action due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the current price of oil.
He said it’s important for the chamber members to provide feedback on what they want from the organization.
“When I look around at the board members that I work with, past and present, the passion for this city is unbelievable,” he said.
He also talked about why Estevan is a great city. When he came here from Weyburn five years ago, he was eager to leave southeast Saskatchewan. When his two-year contract for Estevan expired, he asked to stay here. He had another chance to leave two years later, but he decided again to stay.
“That is because of the people that are on this phone today. When I look around at the people in Estevan – I’ve lived in many different countries and I’ve lived in many different cities, and you guys are special. There’s a resilience that can be seen in Saskatchewan, but the resilience in Estevan is truly something.”
Not only have he and his family stayed because they love the city, but his wife has started a small business.
The next edition of the Mercury will have more on the chamber AGM.
