SaskPower has provided an update on the widespread power outages to strike the southeast and east-central portions of the province.

鈥淥ur crews continue to assess the damage caused by last night鈥檚 ice storm and are working hard to restore power where it is safe to do so,鈥 SaskPower said in a news release. 鈥淎 large challenge our technicians face is the ongoing risk of additional branches falling onto power lines, so significant tree trimming is needed to ensure repairs hold.鈥

Some customers in the Punnichy, Strasbourg, Fort Qu鈥橝ppelle, and Melville rural will be without power overnight. These areas were hit especially hard, and the terrain is making repairs difficult.

As of 5:00 p.m., there are 22,000 customers without power. SaskPower says it hopes to have a number of damaged lines and poles repaired by later Friday night, though official estimated times of restoration for communities are unavailable at this time.

Since the beginning of the storm until 5:00 p.m. tonight, SaskPower鈥檚 outage centre has fielded over 19,000 calls.

For customers who are in areas where repairs have been completed, there is a possibility that along with the primary lines 小蓝视频 damaged by falling branches, that the service lines connected to a customer鈥檚 home could also be damaged. If this is the case, customers will likely need to reach out to a local electrician to reconnect the service to the home. Technicians will do their best to notify customers if this is the case.

If customers come across a downed line or damaged SaskPower infrastructure, they should stay back a safe distance of at least 10 metres and call the outage centre to report it.
