Teams of dedicated and highly-trained personnel from 16 mine sites around the province tested their skills at the 50th annual Emergency Response/Mine Rescue Skills Competition at Mosaic Place and the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds on June 2.
Underground and surface rescue teams displayed their skills in five separate events, including firefighting, first aid, proficiency skills, practical skills and simulated surface and underground mine problems.
The Westmoreland Coal Company鈥檚 Estevan Mine was among the teams entered in the surface competition, and they took top spot in the first aid category.
Members of the local mine rescue team were team captain Cory Gibson, Brandon Schopp, Jessica Klarholm, Matt Procyshyn, Dustin Fisher and Derek Choma. Lonnie Rooks was the alternate, and Stephen Kitchen was the volunteer co-ordinator.
K+S Potash鈥檚 Bethune Mine was the overall winner in the surface category, while Mosaic Belle Plaine was the runner-up. Nutrien鈥檚 Cory Mine was the underground winner, and Nutrien Lanigan was second.聽
