CARLYLE - Entrepreneurs Deb Andrew and Andrea McEwen have known each other for years and are well known in the Carlyle area for their love of canines.
Andrew and her husband Blair opened their Second Family Dog Lodge, located just west of Carlyle, back in 2018. An addition was added in 2019 and they can now house 30 dogs.
McEwen, owner of Just Fur Paws, has professionally groomed and trained dogs for over 20 years. She grew up in Brandon, Man., and moved to Carlyle in 2011. Since then, she has worked mainly out of her residence northeast of town at the old Krieger farm and acreage. She is the sister of professional curler Mike McEwen.
Her partner, Terry Goebel, works at Spearing Service in Oxbow and he is also owner of Moose Mountain Leisure.
Andrew and McEwen have decided to join forces and are constructing a 24-foot by 32-foot addition to the existing Second Family Dog Lodge facility. It will be fully winterized and hopefully ready for use by Nov. 1. This will enable customers to drop off their pets as normal, but will also allow McEwen to groom and train them at virtually the same location.
McEwen will also sell training gear, food, and other supplements. Both Andrew and McEwen are very excited about their new venture.
“Andrea and I are thrilled to become business partners and we expect a long-lasting, satisfying relationship. We love our dogs and this industry has really expanded the past few years. Our customers often have more than one pet and to become a one-stop shop it will be convenient and seamless for them,” said Andrew.
“Deb and I have different businesses and have never been in competition with each other. Aligning our strengths under virtually one roof is definitely the right thing to do,” added McEwen.
