An energy company has stepped forward with a big contribution towards Torquay’s arena.

Steppe Petroleum Inc., which is based out of Calgary and has a Saskatchewan field office south of Oungre, recently presented a cheque to the Torquay Community Club, which operates the arena. The club’s members have been fundraising for upgrades to the facility.

Club member Nicki Berg said they are replacing the flooring in both the home and visitor players’ benches, as well as in a couple of the dressing rooms and the kitchen. They are also replacing the toilets and sinks in the washrooms and the dressing rooms, and building some new bleachers adjacent to the ice surface.

They will also paint the washrooms in the spring.

Berg said they have had a number of donors step forward, and the support will help them pay for the upgrades, which are expected to cost around $50,000.
