Estevan city council has opted to table a decision on a proposed third arena for the community, leaving it up to the next council to decide.
Council deliberated proposals that it received for the building during Monday night鈥檚 meeting. A total of 15 submissions came in for the arena, which parks and facilities manager Rod March said provided a very good breadth of information to consider.
The estimates to design and build a third arena range from nearly $7.8 million to $13.5 million, plus tax. The lowest bid was from Fresh Projects Builders of Winnipeg.
No local proposals were submitted for the project.
Mayor Roy Ludwig said that since council has less than a year remaining on its present term, and since the economy is in rough shape, council decided this isn鈥檛 the best time to move forward with a third arena.
Ludwig expects the new arena, which would be a no frills project, will likely cost around $9 million or $10 million.
Council issued a request for proposals late last year. The decision received a mixed response from the community, with some voicing support for a third rink, while others opposed the project.
Wednesday鈥檚 edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.聽
