The City of Estevan has applied for funding from the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) due to a severe thunderstorm last month.
Estevan city council approved the application at a meeting on Monday night, 10 days after the storm dropped nearly two inches of rain on the city in just a few hours.
鈥淭he severity of the storm prompted the individuals at PDAP to contact us, to see if our citizens would have any PDAP claims related to flooding,鈥 said Mayor Roy Ludwig.
It鈥檚 believed that numerous local residences suffered water damage due to the flooding.
The Ridge Subdivision in south Estevan, which has suffered numerous issues since people started moving in there a couple of years ago, is believed to have been hardest-hit by the rain.聽
There have been two other properties reporting flood problems.
鈥淪ome will come along later, after they assess the damage,鈥 said Ludwig. 鈥淏ut we thought to be timely, we would get the application in to PDAP, and then anyone that comes along will have the opportunity (to seek support).鈥
Councillor Brian Johnson said he has received reports of flooding on Fifth Street and Perkins Avenue.聽
Only those who suffered flooding or seepage in their basements will be eligible to apply for PDAP support.聽
This is the second straight year the city has applied to PDAP for assistance for residents affected by a significant rain event. Last year, they applied when Estevan received 5 1/2 inches of rain on Sep. 5.
PDAP representatives came to Estevan in late September to speak to affected citizens. It doesn鈥檛 appear they will have to do the same this year, since it doesn鈥檛 appear there were as many victims of flooding this time. But Ludwig said PDAP might decide to come.
Anyone with inquiries can contact PDAP at 1-866-632-4033, or visit the PDAP website to see if they are eligible.
