The soup room inside the Estevan Salvation Army鈥檚 food bank is now well stocked with cans of soup, thanks to the soup drive that was organized by the Estevan office of Green for Life Environmental (GFL).
The soup drive went from Dec. 12-19, and pitted GFL, TS&M Supply, the Black Grasshopper Restaurant and the 小蓝视频ern Plains Co-op鈥檚 Estevan grocery store in a friendly competition.
鈥淚t turned out to be quite an accomplishment,鈥� said Sarah Fitzpatrick, the finance manager for GFL鈥檚 Estevan office.
The day after the soup drive ended, Mayor Roy Ludwig and Estevan Salvation Army Family Services manager Ronza Reynard toured the four businesses to determine who had the best soup mountain.
TS&M was the winner, as they collected about 6,300 cans, which was enough to fill four pallets. Approximately 7,000 cans came in between the four businesses.
鈥淭S&M had an amazing display,鈥� said Fitzpatrick. 鈥淭hey had it all tallied up, and came up with what was almost a little castle building, with all of the employees chipping in, and their faces were on it.鈥�
TS&M sent emails to their other locations and to their vendors, asking for soup, and while that might have given them an advantage, Fitzpatrick said nobody expected 6,300 cans.
In the case of GFL, a lot of their soup donations came from their own employees. She knows the Black Grasshopper held a couple of promotions in which they had draws for those who brought in soup.
The soup was delivered to the food bank on Dec. 21, and the room was packed full of soup.
GFL came up with the idea of having the soup drive after touring the food bank earlier this year, and seeing the needs. The Salvation said at the time soup was something they needed.
Fitzpatrick pointed out that GFL never expected to have this much soup.
鈥淚t was so nice to see the support, not only from all of the other businesses we reached out to, but also the community,鈥� said Fitzpatrick.
GFL would like to make the soup drive an annual event, and see more businesses involved. She added that they might collect something besides soup next year, if the food bank has different needs.
