Marie Beaudoin is a freelance animator living in Assiniboia. She studied fine arts and media arts at the University of Calgary and Emily Carr University in Vancouver. Currently, Beaudoin鈥檚 art is 小蓝视频 featured in the Kay Kristo Room in the Assiniboia and District Public Library.
She described her display in the library as a collection of works lacking a central theme. However, there arguably was an unambiguous consistency existing in her pieces in this presentation. Her art was bursting with delightful yet chilling imagery, reflecting Beaudoin鈥檚 interest in the macabre, but with some humorous and oddly endearing twists. At times, her methodology appeared to resemble the horror classification of Japanese anime. Sometimes, Beaudoin鈥檚 art even reflected an earlier period of Japanese art dating to the Edo period (1600-1868) when the y艒kai, or the legendary ghosts and phantoms, were depicted in woodblock prints in the illustrative storybooks of Japan鈥檚 latter feudal era. 聽
Much like the water-based ink paintings of the yokai, Beaudoin鈥檚 art contained vivid colours, glaze-like impressions and occasional moments of translucence. Her paintings captured the imaginations of the viewers with startling but sometimes comical imagery.
Beaudoin said she liked to express offbeat and startling associations in her art. She enjoyed merging the adorable with the uncanny. Her illustrative spectacles as exhibited in the library captured the imagination of the viewers who were intrigued with her interest in presenting horror, but with the artist鈥檚 charming and unique perspective. In essence, Beaudoin鈥檚 art managed to find a balance with images which were anxiety-ridden yet synchronously delightful.聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽
