Art provides an outlet for expression that defies age. That's evident in the artworks of the Golden Tones Artists? Group, which will have work on display at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery from October 26 to November 7.
Formed in 2009 at the Weyburn Special Care Home (WSCH) under the guidance of talented local artist Erica Maas, the Golden Tones group was inspired by a creative resident.
Former WSCH resident Herbert Doan inspired other residents to show their creative side after displaying his freehand drawings. Doan?s passion was to express himself by drawing animals, especially wild cats and horses.
Despite having no formal training, Doan created animals as he saw them - free and unencumbered by man. One can feel the spirit that dwells in the animals as Doan portrayed them. Although Doan has passed, he has left the group a legacy in his drawings.
Golden Tone artist Ruth Bernard, who originally hails from Trossachs, will display pencil drawings of herself and those who have touched her life. She has even pencilled cartoon characters that are not only entertaining, but bring back memories of humour from simpler times.
Another artist, Edna Taylor, creates meticulously detailed cross-stitch pictures. Her skill in contrasting and blending colours has created pictures that are awe-inspiring.
Abstract artworks are presented by both Colleen Mantay and Irene Wilson. Leta Ross, Betty Irwin, Bob Watson, Evelyn Pretty and Muriel Burton?s talents lean towards contemporary topics using vibrant colours and great imagination.
One well-known resident, Vera Bissett, who taught Home Economics at Weyburn Comprehensive School, will present one of her paintings that she completed prior to moving to WSCH. Bissett, just a few years short of 100, still has that creative aura about her.
A meet and greet reception will be held on October 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery with music provided by WSCH resident Bill Dube and homemade refreshments provided by WSCH residents.
