ASSINIBOIA - Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia is presenting a series of art classes for six months, beginning January 22. Local artist instructors are Alison Lewis and Crystal Thorburn.
The first four classes involve drawing: Jan 22, Jan 26, Feb 5, Feb 9. Participants can choose whether to attend one or several classes, running alternate Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Those interested must be 16 years or older to attend, and must pre-register at 306-642-5292 (Shurniak Gallery).
Classes are $5 each, including materials. Content in each class is different, so come out and join in the fun of trying something new.
Shurniak Art Gallery has been awarded an “Artists in Communities Project Grant” from SK Arts, formerly known as Sask. Arts Board. This financial support is made possible by SK Arts, through funding provided by the Government of Saskatchewan, and by Sask. Culture Inc, through funding provided by Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture, and Recreation.
The project also includes free talks at the gallery once a month. The first talk is scheduled for February 4 at 1:30 p.m., on the topic of drawing and mark-making.
Guest speaker David Munro will speak on the St. Victor Petroglyphs, and the importance of these early marks.
The entire six month project, named “Metamophosis”, is organized and delivered by Alison and Crystal at the art gallery. Other upcoming class topics are fibre art, acrylic painting, and fun with clay. The final month will be spent with the whole community invited , assembling an art collaboration of a monarch butterfly, created from welded steel, cement, and clay tiles. The butterfly will symbolize the metamorphosis or change in the gallery itself, and our community.
These informative and creative activities at the art gallery are sure to pass the winter by. The next set of four classes will be based on watercolour painting, beginning mid-February.
