WEYBURN - A number of art classes are coming up in January and February at the Credit Union Spark Centre, including working in mixed media and clay.
Artist Patrick Fernandez will hold a class in using mixed media on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 1-4 p.m.
He currently has an exhibition at the Weyburn Art Gallery, entitled “Tadhana”, which is the Tagalog word for “fate”. He will show how artists can use a variety of mediums to explore their creativity.
A “Mad Science” class for children aged six to 12 will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 to 11 a.m., where children can have fun doing science experiments.
A number of clay classes are coming up as well, including a class in making a clay mug on Sunday, Jan. 15, from 1-3 p.m.
A class in making decorative clay jars will be held on Fridays, Jan. 20 and 27, from 6-9 p.m. This class will use the sfraffito technique, which uses unfired nearly dry clay where the underglaze is scraped away to reveal the design.
The first class will instruct students in creating clay jars, and in the second class, they will paint their jars with the underglaze before transferring their design and carving.
A child and adult class to create a heart bowl will be held on Sunday, Feb. 5 fro 10 a.m. to noon. Students will create a heart-shaped bowl using simple hand-building techniques, and the bowls will be glazed during the class. The bowls can be picked up about two weeks after, to allow time to be kiln-fired.
An introduction to hand-building will be held for adults, with a six-week class to run on Wednesdays from Feb. 8 to March 15, from 6-9 p.m. each evening.
This class is a prerequisite for anyone wanting to join the Pottery Club or to take out a studio membership to the pottery studio.
A second class in wheel-throwing will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This class will continue where Wheel Throwing I left off, with techniques in using the wheel in the pottery studio.
Meanwhile, the James Weir People’s Choice art exhibition opened on Thursday, and is open for voting until March 17 in the Weyburn Art Gallery. The awards for the top vote-getters will be presented at a reception on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
