ASSINIBOIA - London. 1973. Rock and Roll legend Little Richard got up on stage to perform, and boldly declared: “I want you all to know that I am the King of Rock ‘n Roll!” Just think about that for a moment. Wow. Elvis Presley was still alive back then. Everyone thought that Elvis was the King of Rock ‘n Roll. So who then, really was the King of Rock? Flip a coin. You just might find the answer. Or not!
Rock ‘n Roll. Jive. And Swing. If that’s your thing, let’s hope you didn’t miss the Bromantics concert. Shame on you! If you did.
The Prince of Wales Centre in Assiniboia was the place to be if you wanted to dance and have a little fun, during the Bromantics concert held on March 5. Oh sure, the weather was rotten. And temperatures were wickedly bitter and cold. It always is on March 5. Right?
But inside the Steven Wald Memorial Auditorium? That’s another story. The Bromantics were ripping it up on stage, much to the delight of the crowd.
Just who are the Bromantics anyway, you might ask? Simply put, they’re a sharp-dressed six piece tribute band from Moose Jaw. Their web site says: “The Bromantics are a youthful revitalisation of the 1950’s, with brilliant brass tones and doo-wop harmonies that keep the audience screaming for more.” They are a “cross between nostalgia and modern trend, attracting people of all ages”. Their songs “are timeless and the dances are contagious.”
Everything the website says of the Bromantics is true, except they left out a few things. Their stage presence is huge.
Their appearance is great and their sound is wonderful. Not too loud. Not too quiet. Just right. Not harsh. Not muffled or muddy. And best of all, their music is wall-to-wall shuck and jive. Just the way folks like it. If you like to slow dance, however ... you may be slightly disappointed.
What else can one say about this band? The Bromantics are funny. They’re cute. They’re animated. They’re entertaining. Best of all, they’re not self absorbed. That’s the way I see it, at least. From where I stand! And that’s the way I like it!
