The Assiniboia and District Arts Council has installed its new ARTS UP! Exhibit for the month of November.
Art works by students from the Assiniboia Elementary School are featured on four large panels in the Kay Cristo Room at the Assiniboia and District Library.
The Grade 5A class, taught by Lisa Reid, were aiming to draw a pumpkin patch. They had to use space and line elements in their pumpkin design. At least half of the class took advantage of the opportunity to use the rich colours of autumn. Some got creative and coloured their pumpkins using the flag colours of many nations to appear like a United Nations pumpkin. Others were shaded or striped. The students practiced creating horizons, and learned about depth perception.
The Grade 5B class, taught by Marni Chadwick, created self-portraits drawing and colouring with pencil crayon on paper. The collection titled, 鈥淗ere we are鈥, is an interesting study on personality. The audience can spot the free spirits, sunny dispositions, and conscientious natures.
Mrs. Chadwick鈥檚 Grade 6B class created individual works that use the style of artist Andy Warhol. The drawings are very bright with the lively primary colours preferred by Warhol. The repetition of an image gave the students more opportunities to add bold colour variations.
Audiences should be prepared to spend some time admiring the entire panel as well as each individual work. The Grade 7/8 class, taught by Laurie Hawkins, drew complex images of people from a bygone era relaxing on a river bank and added vertical layers of colour. In the drawing assignment, the students were to use the seven elements 鈥 line, texture, form, shape, colour, space and value.
The Grade 6A class, taught by Natasha Struble, experimented with geometry to create Pop Art. The students created stars by overlapping triangles, then they coloured parts of their triangles in vivid designs to create contrast by using texture and colour tones. By doing this, they made the stars pop off the page giving a type of 3D effect.
