The changing of the closet

Call it the changing of the seasons, the end of summer or the kickoff to a new agenda but to me it still involves the changing of the closet. Fall (well, we're nearly there) conjures up so many endings and beginnings.

Call it the changing of the seasons, the end of summer or the kickoff to a new agenda but to me it still involves the changing of the closet.

Fall (well, we're nearly there) conjures up so many endings and beginnings. Some friends have told me they've finished harvesting their prairie crops; for me, the remaining tomatoes have had their last chance and they're going to be plucked from their vines, though green as the grass used to be. Their failure to ripen just means more chutney and fried Lycopersicon esculentum with poached eggs at our house.

Fall also brings the opportunity for continuing education. While going back to school may not be the activity of choice for some folks, decades younger than I, it's a great opportunity for many seniors. Another friend recently told me he is taking a writing course. I think that's terrific! Already a good writer, I can hardly wait to read what this extra boost will produce. For me, enrolment in our local Elder College meant that I could register for a photography course and pay less tuition than my junior classmates.

This all brings me to the "changing of the closet" and that involves a lot of work: removing summer blouses, skirts and trousers from their hangers followed by sorting, mending, washing and packing them away. Once that chore is done, it's time to unpack, iron and hang the warmer garments. It sounds so simple but somehow it always takes more time than I think it should.

Does God care about the colours and fabric of our wardrobe? Probably not, but He sure looks for a servant heart, whatever the season!

"Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5)
