Does God laugh?

Last week I submitted the argument that Spring really wasn't far away. This I did in spite of knowing that blowing snow, cold and generally "sick of winter" blues affected most of my reading audience.

Last week I submitted the argument that Spring really wasn't far away. This I did in spite of knowing that blowing snow, cold and generally "sick of winter" blues affected most of my reading audience. It was a gesture of hope, intended to be an encouragement.

I was delighted, then, when Miranda - a friend and faithful reader of the column - sent me a photo illustrating the "spring's just around the corner" line. In the centre of the shot stood the corner of a concrete wall, cracked but certainly upright; peeking out "just around the corner" was a bright red, heavy metal spring. I loved it especially since her sense of humour obviously is as wacky as mine. There's nothing like a good chuckle to get one going in the morning!

The more I thought about that email, the more I thought about this weighty question: Does God laugh? "He must," I reasoned, "if He didn't have a sense of humour then why did He give us the trait?" Not only that, just take a look at some of the creatures He made!

Since I believe that the Scriptures are the definitive word in matters of theology, I decided to check it out. First, when the 90 year old Sarah discovered she was with child she declared that God made her laugh (wouldn't you?). I can't imagine His scowling while she hooted with delight. Then, writers of the Bible spoke often of God's delight in having His people rejoice. In my books you can't give it if you don't have it!

Does the Almighty laugh? I honestly don't know but I know He offers joy!

"Also that day theyrejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women also and the children rejoiced. The joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off." (Nehemiah 12:43-Amplified)
