Check that number

Call it bad luck, good fortune, a dumb move or the occasion for a good chuckle - any of these descriptions could be used to describe a news item I read this week.

Call it bad luck, good fortune, a dumb move or the occasion for a good chuckle - any of these descriptions could be used to describe a news item I read this week.

According to this newspaper story, a man called to set up a time and place where he could purchase $100 worth of drugs. The guy at the other end responded and things were set to go. Later but before the scheduled meeting, Purchaser called back with the offer to add some prescription medications to the mix. Again, Seller cooperated. All seemed to go well with one glitch: instead of the intended 'dial a dope" number, Purchaser had called the local Vancouver Island police department. The meeting took place, Purchaser was promptly arrested and when a subsequent search was conducted, it was discovered that he was carrying a gun. Oops.

As serious and horrific the consequences of the illegal drug trade, I admit that I had to chuckle. While I offer my congratulations to a savvy police officer, I think Purchaser definitely is in the running for a "Dumb Move of the Week" award.

Have you ever done something that you wished you could permanently erase from reality and from your memory? I certainly have and, in fact, there are days I still struggle with residual guilt over some of my "Dumb Move" episodes. We dial "wrong numbers" when we fail to take into consideration God's instructions for living a life that pleases Him. As powerful as the temptation to follow our own desires or to throw aside godly restraints, there often are consequences painful beyond our imagination.

"Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil." (Proverbs 3:7)

There's no detail of our lives too insignificant to take to God. You can't go wrong with His number!
