The Assiniboia Skating Club (ASC) held their annual Carnival on March 23, showcasing routines performed by its 45 skaters, ranging in age from 3 to 16 years. This year’s theme was Sun, Sand & Sea.
ASC offers lessons through two programs: CanSkate (where skaters learn basic skills used in hockey, speed skating, figure skating and recreational skating) and Star Skate (where skaters learn specific skills for figure skating), both of which participated in ASC’s Carnival.
The skaters were grouped together based on skill level to perform a routine highlighting what they have learned within the past year.
The CanSkate group routines included a variety of songs and costumes from Tropical Fish, Frogs and Sailors to Surfers, Hula Girls and Tacky Tourists.
The Junior Star Skate group skated to California Girls and the Senior Star Skaters performed skills to Cruise dressed as cowgirls. All the Star Skaters joined together for a final group routine to the upbeat tune Walkin’ On Sunshine. Each Star Skater also performed a duet or solo to a song of her choice in keeping with the Carnival’s theme. At the end of the show, all the skaters were on the ice and received a medal to complete the season. The little ones especially love receiving this special achievement medal and were quite excited to receive them.
All the planning for the Carnival is handled by a group of coach and parent volunteers along with the Board of Directors. They take care of all the details to hold the event from booking ice time, to coordinating costumes, organizing a raffle, working the admission gate and decorating the rink.
ASC itself is governed by a Board of Directors, comprised of parent volunteers. For more information about Assiniboia Skating Club’s lessons, please visit their website at www.assiniboiaskatingclub.com.
