Crews have been out removing snow on Sunday morning.

ESTEVAN - A powerful winter storm has been moving through Estevan and the rest of southeast Saskatchewan on Sunday, bringing heavy snow.

A winter storm warning was issued for the Estevan area on Friday morning due to a system making its way north from the U.S. The worst of the system was slated to reach the southeast early Sunday. The warning was lifted Sunday evening.

"Heavy snow and blowing snow will continue to move eastward through southern Saskatchewan on Sunday," an updated advisory stated on Sunday.

The adverse weather conditions are expected to continue in Saskatchewan until Monday morning.

A low-pressure system brought heavy snow to western Saskatchewan Saturday night. Gusty winds produced blowing snow, leading to reduced visibilities. This area of snow and blowing snow has been moving east and covered the remainder of the southern half of the province on Sunday morning.

"Snow and blowing snow will continue Sunday night before conditions improve Monday morning. Near-blizzard conditions are possible in some locales on Sunday."

Surfaces such as highways, roads, sidewalks, pathways and parking lots might become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow, according to Environment Canada. The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure's Highway Hotline has had travel not recommended advisories on various routes.

"Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow."

Up to 20 centimetres of snow is expected Sunday during the day, and periods of snow and blowing snow are projected for Sunday night for Estevan. The winds are also expected to pick up Sunday afternoon and remain into the evening.

The winds are expected to remain strong Monday and then diminish in the afternoon. Temperatures are supposed to remain below normal until Friday.

There was no immediate word from the City of Estevan on its strategy for removing the snow from the streets, but some snow-removal efforts are happening on Sunday.
