ESTEVAN - It was a great night for the Estevan Humane Society at its annual Whiskers and Wine Gala at the Estevan Exhibition building on Feb. 15.

EHS vice-president Kelsey Rydberg said the gala was not only a chance to raise funds for its animal shelter, but an opportunity to celebrate the community's support and raise awareness about what the EHS is doing in the community to advocate for animals.

The exhibition hall was nearly sold out for the gala. People who turned out enjoyed a meal served by EB's Catering. A server auction allowed supporters to purchase their server for the night. Entertainment followed, with Conner Piche serving as the opening act and Teagan Littlechief the featured performer.

"Both performers did a wonderful job and everyone there loved them," said Rydberg.

Silent and live auctions were part of the event, and a 50/50 draw also helped raise funds.

"We are incredibly lucky with this community," said Rydberg. "They support us endlessly."

There wasn't an estimate on how much money was raised through Whiskers and Wine, but Rydberg said the funds will support the shelter. It costs more than $25,000 per month to operate the shelter. Expenses include spaying and neutering the animals, medical costs and keeping the facility operating.

The EHS also touched on how important it is to be the voice of the animals. A couple of high-profile animal cruelty cases have happened in the area in recent months, and Rydberg encourages people to speak up if they see any such incidents.

"As the Estevan Humane Society, we are committed to 小蓝视频 a voice for the voiceless. Each one of our voices is so important in protecting and advocating for the animals in our community. As a community, we have a duty to protect the vulnerable. We cannot turn a blind eye to animal abuse."

Each year, the EHS sees countless animals that have suffered, she said.

"Animals are counting on you to be their voice. Pay attention to the animals in your neighbourhood. If you see signs of neglect or cruelty, reach out and speak up. Your voice can make a difference. Don't stay silent; don't turn a blind eye."

In 2024, the EHS had 227 animals come through its doors, with 212 adoptions, so the community is making a big difference to so many animals, she said.
