Estevan Taekwon-do Club wins medals against Sask, Alberta athletes

Fifteen members and five instructors from the local club participated.

OSLER - Members of the Estevan Taekwon-do Club travelled to Osler for the Inter-Provincial Global TaeKwon-Do Federation Tournament on May 11.

Fifteen members and five instructors from the local club participated. A total of 102 martial arts athletes from various clubs in Saskatchewan and Alberta entered.

The Estevan TKD Club brought back 22 medals – 10 gold, seven silver and five bronze. The tournament included patterns, sparring and board-breaking competitions.

"All of the competitors from Estevan represented our club with great sportsmanship, a strong competitive spirit and respect," the club wrote in an email to the Mercury and SaskToday. "Each member of our group did a phenomenal job, which was evident in the medals won and their performances.

"In many instances, their efforts exceeded the expectations of the instructors. The members trained hard for this event and it showed."

Athletes competed in divisions based on belt colour and age.

In yellow stripe, Bailey Schmidt finished first in both patterns and sparring.

Among yellow belts, Erica Gener was first in patterns and second in sparring, Gabriel Geral was first in sparring and second in patterns, Ethan Gener was second in both categories, Saber Dodd was third in patterns and fourth in sparring, and Felicity Gervais also competed.

For green belts, Elaina Sliva was second in patterns and first in sparring, Ella Brown was second in sparring, Nate Biletsky was third in sparring, Kyle Lebreo was second in sparring and William Stead was fourth in both.

Rey Lubreo was first in both blue stripe patterns and sparring, while Luke Sliva was first in patterns and third in sparring.

Marina Troyo was first in patterns and sparing for red stripes, and Adam Jocelyn with third in both categories among blue belts.

Instructors included Wayne Brown, Don DeChief, Trinda Jocelyn, Warren Morrical and Simone Saigeon.

Prince Albert, Clavet, Hague, Biggar and Saskatoon were the other Saskatchewan clubs who joined Estevan and the host Osler club. Alberta clubs came from Edmonton, Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Blackfalds.
