Carlyle athletes win medals in second half of Summer Games

The 小蓝视频 East had six gold, three silver and 11 bronze during the Games.

LLOYDMINSTER - Team 小蓝视频 East finished with a flourish at the 2024 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Lloydminster.

The second half of the Games wrapped up on Saturday after competition in several sports. The closing ceremonies were held in the evening.

Team 小蓝视频 East finished with 20 medals – six gold, three silver and 11 bronze. Fifteen of the medals came in the second half of the Games. Sports held in the second half were athletics, baseball, male and female basketball, female soccer, beach volleyball and triathlon.

Among athletes from the Observer's distribution area, Chase Himmelspach of Carlyle won the gold medal in the male javelin toss. He also finished seventh in the long jump.

Carlyle's Dane Peterson won bronze in the male shot put. He also finished 11th in the javelin and 12th in the discus.

Team 小蓝视频 East also won silver in the male athletics sprint medley and bronze in the female 4x100-metre relay. (Athletes for those teams were not immediately available). 

All of Team 小蓝视频 East's gold and silver medals came in athletics.

In male athletics, Sawyer Tomaszewski of Carlyle was fifth in the 110-metre hurdles, seventh in the 300-metre hurdles, 12th in the triple jump and 16th in the long jump; Khalifa Elshein of Oxbow was fifth in the 400 metres and 800 metres; and Grayson Brock of Oxbow was seventh in the pentathlon.

In female athletics, Kirsten East of Carlyle finished eighth in shot put, 11th in the javelin and 11th in the discus; Karsyn Gervais of Carlyle was seventh in the long jump; and Peyton Irwin of Oxbow was 12th in the 3,000 metres and 16th in the 1,500 metres.

The male basketball team, which included Carter Yunick of Bienfait and Spencer Turk of Forget, finished sixth.

The baseball team finished seventh. Members included Seth Franklin and Branson Hutt of Alameda; Cort Barber of Carnduff; and Nathan Gardiner of Gainsborough.

Also finishing seventh was the female soccer team, which included Abby Coderre, Abigail Hall, Kierra Goudy and Nella Hall, all of Stoughton.

The Team 小蓝视频 East mission staff includes Joni Hagen and Jacquie Van De Woestyne, co-chefs de mission; as well as Tara-Leigh Heslip, Vickie Procyk, Kathy Erickson, Dan Heslip, Tina Clay, Dallas Cossar, Laurie Colhoun and Jodie Wall.

The first half featured archery, canoe-kayak, golf, male soccer, female softball, Special Olympics bocce ball, swimming, tennis, and male and female volleyball.

This year marks the first time the Saskatchewan Summer Games took place since 2016 in Estevan. The Games were supposed to be held in Lloydminster in 2020, but had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
