Concert for flood relief planned

Two local musicians are looking to spearhead a benefit concert and dance to raise money for flood relief in Yorkton, and Monday they appeared before the regular meeting of Yorkton Council looking for their support.

"We are proposing organizing and hold a benefit event Aug. 27," said spokesperson Ken Kohlert, who appeared before Council along with Will Woods.

The concert would consist of local and provincial musicians and would be combined with a silent auction, explained Kohlert.

"Revenues would be generated by event admission, auction items and beverages sales," said Kohlert. "Performers and auction items will be accessed by voluntary donation, and no expenses shall be incurred, including sound, stage and lighting."

Kohlert said he is sure the community will support the effort.

"Due to the severity of the local situation we are also confident that every component of this event including advertising, security, staffing and coordination of this event can be accomplished at no cost," he said.

With that in mind Kohlert said they were looking for the City to come on board as a partner.

"We are asking that the City of Yorkton aid this effort by providing the facility (the curling rink) at no charge," he said.

Kohlert said the intention is to raise money which would then go to an agency involved in flood relief efforts.

"All monies realized from this event would then be turned over to a local aid agency," he said. " The agency or agencies would be determined in consultation with your Council or staff."

Councillor Bob Maloney said the idea was timely.

"I think this is a tremendous undertaking," he said, adding the suggestion the request be turned over to the Gallagher Centre Management Board for consideration. The suggestion for the referral received the unanimous consent of Council.
