REGINA — Visitors to Regina’s downtown can now enjoy free street parking an hour earlier in the evening, following a recent change approved by city council.
As of April 14, metered parking in the Downtown and Centre Square neighbourhoods is free starting at 5 p.m., instead of 6 p.m. The move is intended to encourage more people to shop, dine and explore the downtown area after work hours.
“We’re making it easier for people to enjoy what downtown Regina has to offer,” said Mayor Chad Bachynski in a news release. “By adjusting parking meter times from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m., visitors and residents alike can explore, shop and dine without worrying about plugging the meter after 5. It’s all about creating a more inviting, vibrant atmosphere.”
Paid parking remains in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Parking continues to be free for up to two hours on Saturdays and all day on Sundays.
Downtown and Centre Square remain the only neighbourhoods in Regina where street parking is metered and monitored by the city.
Although the change awaits final approval through a bylaw amendment, enforcement officers have already implemented the updated hours.
