REGINA - The City of Regina is offering an inclusive drop-in sport and fitness program at the Fieldhouse, where any age or ability can participate.

The programs include various activities like wheelchair basketball, badminton and more.

Around 2023, "there was an identified need to create an inclusive time and space through community feedback to allow for the adapted community newcomers to just have a safe space to come into our facilities," said Sarah Stochmal, program specialist with the City of Regina.

This was part of the city’s Adapted Recreational Plan for the years of 2022-2025 for increased recreational programs for people with disabilities.

Part of the plan is making foundational commitments, which includes building trust in the community and ongoing consultation.

The city started conducting surveys, while community members also emailed the Disability Reference Group (DRG), sharing what they believed Regina was missing.

Stochmal noted the feedback they received mentioned the need for an exclusive drop-in program at a gym, with knowledgeable staff on-site to assist anyone in need.

So, Regina first piloted the program back in 2023, and officially launched it in 2024.

One of the challenges the program has faced so far is getting the word out, said Stochmal.

"I still get [a] e-mail saying, ‘oh, I didn't even know the city offers adapted programs.'

Some signs suggest people are starting to become aware of the program. Stochmal noted the program started off with around five people coming in. Now there can be anywhere from 20-40 people.

Health benefits

According to the Developmental Disabilities Association, "engaging in regular physical activity can be particularly transformative, enhancing not only their physical health but also their emotional well-小蓝视频 and social connections."

Additionally, exercises have been shown to enhance cognitive function, which includes memory and attention.

At the Fieldhouse, many pieces of gym equipment are accessible for disabled people. Depending on the type of equipment, the seats can either be taken out or moved away to accommodate people who cannot walk.

The drop-in program also offers equipment that's intended for people with disabilities to strengthen parts of the body.

Even though the program is designed to be more inclusive, Stochmal pointed out, "we don't turn [anyone] away [regardless of if] they’re disabled or not. We welcome all abilities."

Many youth have used the program to get together and play basketball or badminton, she noted.

The drop-in program runs on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. More information about it can be
