Mayor Chad Bachynski said he was informed last week about the trip to Washington.

REGINA - With the potential for tariffs to be implemented by the U.S. in early April, Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski is currently in Washington, D.C, for the Mayors' Trade Summit.

The summit includes Mayors from Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

Some of the Mayors representing Canada are Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of Ottawa and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke.

From Bachynski’s impression, each mayor was selected as a means to get representation across Canada. Bachynski himself only found out he was going to the summit last week.

From the American side, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther will be some of the representatives for the U.S.

No information was provided for the mayors representing Mexico.

As he landed in Washington, Bachynski focused on what he would talk about during the summit.

"Looking at it from Regina and from Saskatchewan, [I wanna focus on] fuel, food and fertilizer."

In 2023, Sask. led the nation in per capita exports of crude oil (fossil fuels),

With its agriculture, Sask. exported $18.5 billion worth of exports in 2024, which includes grains, oilseeds, pulses, and livestock.

As for fertilizer/potash, in 2023, Sask. exported $11.5 billion worth of it.

Along with this, Bachynski said the Canadian mayors will combine their information to give a better understanding of the different impacts of tariffs on both sides of the border.

He plans to use the information given by Economic Development Regina (EDR) and information from the province as well.

His ultimate hope "is tariffs are removed, or at least we see some progress in negotiations and willingness to discuss tariffs СÀ¶ÊÓƵ removed."

Bachynski also mentioned furthering relations with American and Mexican counterparts.

"We want to have a good relationship going forward because they are a great trade partner and it's beneficial to everybody to keep that going."

After the trade summit finishes on Friday, Bachynski will speak to the media on how it went.
