MONTREAL — Two children ages three and 11 were found safe after their father's vehicle was stolen with them inside in the Montréal-Nord borough on Thursday evening.

Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant says the father left the car running with his children in the back seat while he went into a bank.

Brabant says the thief jumped into the man's car and started driving, apparently without realizing there were children inside.

The father called 911 and police canvassed the neighbourhood and eventually found the children, who had been dropped off on a nearby street.

Brabant says the children were let out of the vehicle within minutes and were unharmed, but the stolen vehicle has not been found.

He says police have interviewed the children and are looking at security camera footage in the area in the hopes of tracking down the suspect.
