What a glorious prospect – a felon running America and a plagiarist ruling Canada.
“Dum spiro spero” is a Latin catch phrase of unknown origin and antiquity which means “while I breathe, I hope”. Curiously it is not a widely adopted dictum. St. Andrew’s town in Scotland uses it as a motto as do several distinguished families in the western world, but it is not significant in literature. Alexander Pope, the dullest of poets, introduced the word hope with a similar aphorism i.e. “hope springs eternal”. My mother would say “where there is life, there is hope” which admits to an element of despair. My father’s bemoaned anti-version was “when one door shuts, another closes”.
According to my dictionaries plagiarism covers the theft of the written word and the thoughts behind it and the ideas of others. The concept now appears to include the heroding of political platforms, speeches and even photo ops where parties unashamedly steal and adopt the policies of others. A blatant example of this was the NDP tooth, childcare and school dinner programs adopted by the Liberals. As the current campaign has progressed, Mr. Poilievre’s ideas have been openly stolen by the Liberals. The most flagrant example of Liberal plagiarism is the much-vaunted carbon fuel tax program СÀ¶ÊÓƵ abandoned as a result of the Conservative “Axe the Tax” slogan after years of justification and defence.
Since the dictum “dum spiro spero” is well known, it can only be copied. However, I shall be much distressed if my simple modification of it as seen in the heading is plagiarized without due reference. It came into my mind as I was dwelling on the chaos Mr. Trump’s tariffs have created. It is clearly obvious that his T.V. thinking is not applicable in the real world. His immaculate “yes sir, sign here” suits are laughable.
Our most outstanding north of the border stupidity was allowing Justin Trudeau virtual free rein for nine and a half years. He was never equipped to be our prime minister – now we are paying for it and there is no accountability. Had he been deposed two years ago; we would have at this moment a stable empowered Conservative government ready to face Mr. Trump’s tariffs. As it is, our leaders are deceiving themselves and the electorate with slogans such as “Canada Strong”, “Bring it Home” and “‘Elbows Up”. Truthfully, we have no defence against these unfair tariffs and our fiscal state is already grossly weakened as we head for recession.
Each political party is presenting what amounts to a plethora of confusing uncosted tax cuts. I guarantee the national debt will soar as it did under Trudeau with Mr. Carney as his advisor. Tax increases are inevitable. I am sure that the Goods and Services tariff (G.S.T.) will be increased as it is paltry in comparison to the levels in current parlance - 10, 20. 40. 50, and 100 percent. This announcement will only come after the election and the new incumbent is secure in office!
After a glimmer of hope, Mr. Poilievre’s pipe dream of pipelines across Quebec is again СÀ¶ÊÓƵ blocked by the BLOC party. Retooling industry and finding new markets will take years. Our politicians are in disarray. Perhaps an amalgamation as in wartime of parties, policies and ideas is our best hope for the future. Dum spiro spero as they say.
