WEYBURN - The hot days of summer are upon us. There is a lot of concern among local farmers and livestock producers as the hot, dry weather is draining topsoil moisture, and a nice soaking rain is needed for many around the province. I imagine that during these hot days, many people will be seeking ways to stay cool this summer.

I can remember the fun of running through a sprinkler, or just relaxing in the shade, on a hot summer day. It is important that residents check with water restrictions before setting up a sprinkler, or filling up an paddling pool in their yard.

Luckily here in Weyburn we have the outdoor swimming pool that is now open, plus there are two spray parks that are available. Many of the places that offer summer programs do have air conditioning - like the Weyburn Public Library and the Credit Union Spark Centre.

There are also camping opportunities at River Park and Nickle Lake, for those who want to get away, but still stay close to the community.

While having summer fun outdoors, it is very important to remember to avoid heat stroke, as it can become a life-threatening emergency. Heat stroke is the result of long, extreme exposure to the sun. Always remember to stay hydrated while you are outdoors, wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and take opportunities to get into the shade or indoors.

Remember that one can still get sun burns even on a cloudy day, and that you should continue to watch out for heat exhaustion if you are relaxing in a shaded part of your deck. Summer is a great time for outdoor barbecues and deck parties, but it remains important for those indulging in these activities to be aware of the effects heat has on their body.

I know how easy it can be to lose track of time, especially when you are at a fun event and trying to capture every second of it (I ended up with a slight burn after covering the ‘Biggest Little Fair in Saskatchewan’ in Creelman). You might not notice the effects that heat has on your body right away. I felt fine that day but the following day I slept for several hours, as my body was recovering.

For those farmers and producers who are out in the fields trying to get haying done, or their fields ready for harvest, it is just as important to take care of your health as it is to monitor your crops. It can be quite stressful right now to be watching the skies and hoping for rain, and there are many programs that are 小蓝视频 offered to help farmers during this difficult time.

The weather continues to be a common topic of discussion, and one that we often complain about. When it is hot - it is too hot. When it is cold - it is too cold. So let’s enjoy the weather we have, and try to make the most of our summer!
