Toronto police say one person dead, others taken to hospital in overnight hit-and-run

TORONTO — A man is facing charges after a hit-and-run collision in Toronto that left a woman dead and two others injured and closed a portion of a highway early Thursday morning.

TORONTO — A man is facing charges after a hit-and-run collision in Toronto that left a woman dead and two others injured and closed a portion of a highway early Thursday morning.

Police say two vehicles were involved in a crash on the Gardiner Expressway just after 2 a.m., and one of the drivers fled on foot.

They say a black Audi sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with the rear of a KIA sedan.

Police say five people were in the sedan that was hit and three of them were taken to hospital while two were not injured.

A 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say a 20-year-old woman sustained life-altering injuries and a two-year-old child was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

They say the driver of the black sedan was seen fleeing the scene and walking on the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway towards Spadina Avenue.

Police say a 48-year-old man from Whitby was arrested and charged with impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm and dangerous operation causing death, among other charges.
