Wilkie presents awards to citizens of the year

Congratulations to Jill and Travis Thomson, who were named Wilkie's 2022 Citizens of the Year and Piper Kent who was named 2022 Junior Citizen of the Year.

WILKIE—Wilkie Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year awards were presented March 17 and 20.

Piper Kent was surprised March 20 morning with a special presentation at school naming her as Wilkie’s 2022 Junior Citizen of the Year.

Mayor David Ziegler and Recreation Director Lori Fenrich were at McLurg High School to make the presentation to Piper.

Piper is an 18-year-old, Grade 12 student who is a leader in SLC and takes initiative to run and participate in activities in school. She has also been involved in ‘Charity in Action’ and is willing to help out wherever needed.

Piper was awarded second place in the Legion Remembrance Day contest at the provincial level and has also won a Hazee Youth Art Award.

Having just returned home from SHSAA provincial wrestling championships, Piper was noted for her commitment to wrestling as well as mentoring younger athletes. The 2023 gold medal she won adds to other provincial medals she has earned in the sport.

The nomination also read that Piper is academically strong and will attend Dalhousie University in the fall to pursue a degree in psychology.

The March 17 Wilkie Outlaws game was where the Wilkie Citizen of the Year award was announced and presented.

The message read at the game before the presentation was made, said, “This time of year, we award a special community member with the citizen of the year award.  This year a husband and wife were nominated. This couple is always helping out and volunteering whether it’s with minor hockey, minor ball, Playschool, the PACT group at Norman Carter, the rec board, the community club and even for the Outlaws. This couple is always ready to help out and take on the challenge of getting things done.”

Jill and Travis Thomson were announced as the 2022 Wilkie Citizens of the Year.
