Wheatkings' season launched with hitches

Still early in the season, the West Central Wheatkings are off to a slow start and looking to bring in some big wins.

UNITY – The U18AA Wheatkings have seen a rough start to their season even though it is still early. They have played five games, winning their first game against the Warman Wildcats.

“We’ve started the year with some injuries that have hurt our performance,” says team manager Melissa Cey.

“Deegan German broke his hand and has not played a game yet. Connor Ralston broke his arm on Oct. 14 during our game against Warman and will be out for six weeks.”

This year’s team is comprised of 19 players from Unity, Evesham, Macklin, Scott, Kerrobert and Kindersley. The team has divided the home games among Unity, Kindersley and Kerrobert this year.

Cey spoke of how the team is competitive and works well together on the ice.

The team held its annual bottle drive Oct. 22 in Unity. Cey says the response from the community was fantastic.

“It sure feels good to know we have all this support behind our team.”

The fan turnout between Kindersley and Unity has exceeded expectations, according to team management.

“We expect some great battles this year which should make some good games to watch.”

The Wheatkings will play in Unity Nov. 4 at 8:30 p.m. against the Martensville Marauders.
