Well-balanced youth activity enters third decade

Kids have flipped for the Unity Gymnastics Club, now entering their third decade of offering this youth sports activity.

UNITY — They didn’t have to bend over backwards to achieve their goal to have kids flipping for the Unity Gymnastics Club, having been in existence for more than 20 years.

Gymnastics can be a youth activity for everyone. The dynamic nature of the sport appeals to all ages of children. As well, the sport is developing their fitness levels and helping them acquire fundamental skills in gymnastics and flexibility. Gymnastics athletes enjoy exploring various forms of movement in a fun and creative manner.

“Our goal is for children to have fun and learn new skills while improving on previous skills they learned while with the gymnastics club, “says Nicole Kobelsky, a 16-year veteran instructor.

The club is purely recreational, meaning there are no competitions attended. This gives participants a season of fun and camaraderie with fellow gymnasts without the pressure of competition preparation or anxiety about performing publicly.

The club’s nine instructors are in the gym at one time, but a total of 13 coaches work with the club throughout the year.

The club season begins Sept. 14. Last season the club saw 60 participants and hopes to see similar numbers for the upcoming season. Classes are held in St. Peter’s School gym every Thursday evening.

The club was beneficiary of a donation from Unity Western Days, which Kobelsky says will be used to purchase new equipment. An executive meeting at the end of August will give final approval before purchasing.

As part of the club fees, there is a $15 fundraising fee. This money, plus any surplus that may be had from higher enrolments, goes towards purchasing new equipment each year.

The gymnastics club runs for 15 weeks, and they choose not to operate when school is on a break, giving kids some time off with their families.

Children registering must be five by Oct. 21 of the current year. The club includes kids up until they graduate from high school.

Volunteer coaches for the upcoming season include: Nicole Kobelsky - head coach; Jennifer Zunti - coach; Tanya Chester - coach; Danielle Bowker - junior coach; Spencer Halter -- junior coach; Quinn Halter - junior coach; Krislynn Nelson - junior coach; Madison Manchester - junior coach; Amaya Frocklage - junior coach.  Fill-in coaches for the upcoming season include: Carmen Bowker - coach; Emma Ralston - junior coach; Chenae Bowker - junior coach; and Jade Venn - junior coach.
