UNITY — It’s that time of year again to head to Unity Golf Course with your friends, the Woods and the Greens.
Club president, Glen Heitt, says, “Our season has had a great start as opening day was kept busy throughout. In fact, since we opened for the season, the course has remained busy, which makes us very happy."
Unity’s nine-hole grass-greens golf course is in a scenic treed setting with watered fairways and rolling hills. The club offers cart rentals, a driving range and a practise putting hole. In 2021, several memorial markers were unveiled throughout the course which showcase a legacy for longtime members, contributors, supporters and founders.
Membership appears to be on track with last year’s numbers and all indications, judging from how busy the course has remained in the first month of opening, are that golfers are continuing to choose to golf at home and support the UGC.
Tara Pilat is the new clubhouse manager, while Brad Sloboda is greenskeeper/superintendent. Merv Bosch has joined the UGC team as Bill Belcher has retired. Heitt said the club was grateful to Belcher for not only his years of service, but for helping get everything started for this season before his departure.
Heitt adds, “We also welcome Tammy Ward who has accepted the position of secretary/treasurer for the Unity Golf Club.
The recreation venue has kept the process of people booking tee-times for their golf game as that is something that has worked well for staff and players alike.
Heitt acknowledges new equipment will need to be purchased in the future, including a new sprayer and a new groomer and that will come as the club can afford, or a person, group or organization donates toward the purchase.
The executive members acknowledge that while local golfers are accustomed to the scenic course, it’s beautiful surroundings and condition are often remarked on by visitors. Positive reviews by word of mouth or online translates into return customers.
UGC has updated all the signs on each of the nine holes as well as the course’s ad signs throughout.
Wednesday nights remain as men’s night and the club is thankful for community sponsorship for the season for this event, and other activity and events upcoming at the course.
The club will start out with the UGC Men’s and Women’s open May 29. Next on the agenda will be a Friday tournament with the annual Oil Persons' event back on the calendar. June will also see a two-person scramble with men’s, ladies' and mixed divisions. Summer will be left open for local and visiting golfers and tournament action will resume late August with a four-man scramble and junior open, followed by a Fun Day of Golf and member’s tournament in early September.
The club boasts the early beginnings of Justin Wood who is a member of Unity Sports Hall of Fame, winning the 2016 Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Championship as well as earning a bronze medal as the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship in 2021. Hunter Sperle, Denim O’Donnell and Nash Sperle also saw varying success stories in the Maple Leaf Junior tour in 2021, as well as successes with Sask. High School Athletics golf, with the Unity Composite High School program.
