Group councillors for Macklin’s first Boy Scout Troop were Tony Bosch, John Sidlick, Leo Sieben, Ron Lambert, Roman Stang and Rene Calland. Troop leader for the 26 boys was John Sidlick, who thanked the Kinsmen, Kinettes and UCW for the part they played in starting the Macklin troop.

RM of Grass Lake councillors passed a motion that the “secretary place a strongly worded advertisement in the Northwest Herald warning ratepayers that it is an offence by the Statutes of Saskatchewan to cause to be put on the road right-of-way rocks and any other debris.”

Front page headlines announced the arrival of 9-1-1 calling capability in Unity and Wilkie.

Almost 600 people came out to celebrate Canada’s 135th birthday at the Unity Museum grounds. Magician Corey Arcane and his wife/assistant Karin put on two shows, the Greter petting zoo was a big hit, and Mimi the Clown came out from Battleford to play with the kids, young and old.

Chosen by the Atlanta Thrashers, 17-year-old Brad Schell of Scott was first pick on the sixth round of the NHL draft.

Unity Composite High School Valedictorian Darren Brown urged his classmates to “Boldly go where no man has gone before.” Brown was awarded the Governor General’s award as well as several scholarships.
