Unity and Wilkie Fire Department's incidents slow, training ongoing

Fire protective services divisions in Unity and Wilkie provide an update on activity undertaken in August as training continues for their members

UNITY - Compared to the busyness experienced by their team in the spring and during the prolonged drought, August at Unity fire house was a little quieter.

In August,  UFD responded to two grass fires, one MVA and one STARS call at hospital.Two calls for alarms were received where someone had burned something on their stove.

UFD continues to commit to regular practices on procedure, equipment and safety undertaken in August, which also included a house fire simulation and self contained breating apparatus practice.

UFD continues to seek new members and anyone interested can contact a current member for details, the town office or the UFD Facebook page for details. 

The department is transitioning from the leadership of former chief, Leroy Timmermans, to new Fire Chief Dwaine Kopp (former deputy fire chief)

In Wilkie, the Wilkie Volunteer Fire Department responded to an MVA Aug 12. Aug. 24, the squad reported to a vehicle fire.

WFD members continue to commit to regular practices on equipment and procedures to always be prepared for callouts. Practices in August included SCBA, air compressor operations, hose lays and apparatus operations.

WFD is planning public education events in conjunction with fire prevention week with a barbecue and open house currently planned for Oct. 6.  Details will be released in the near future.
