UNITY — Unity Minor ball alumni player Rhett Feser was back in town to give back to the community he grew up in.
Feser led a two-day pitching clinic May 28 and 29. Feser played in UMB from 2003-12. He attended Badlands Baseball Academy for his 2013 and 2014 school years. He played one year with Niagara College in 2015 before attending Prairie Baseball Academy in Lethbridge for the 2016-17 season.
Feser’s professional baseball career began in 2018 in Utrecht Netherlands of the Dutch Major League. He spent the winter of 2019 playing in Adelaide Australia. In the summer of 2019, Feser helped win the men’s national championship with the Chatham Ironmen.
COVID-19 shifted his career from player to coach and Feser has been the pitching coach at the Prairie Baseball Academy for the past three years.
“Why I enjoy coming back? Because we say when you're a Cardinal you're a Cardinal for life,” Feser tells the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca.
“We see a lot of rural players reach the next levels in hockey but fewer in baseball. I think coaching and resources and information for volunteer coaches are great ways to allow kids to see baseball as a branch of progression in the same light hockey is seen. Plus going to the field and seeing 10-year-olds having a blast just throwing the ball back and forth and leaving practice and camps to go throw with their friends on the adjacent diamond is so refreshing.
“I want to make sure they never lose the perspective that you play baseball only because baseball is really, really fun.”
