UNITY – Many softball fans were excited to hear the UK Royals ladies’ team were making a comeback.
Royals alumni, Jessica Woit and Dacey Francis, were approached by a group of young women who wanted to continue to play. This was encouraging to the duo, so they started reaching out to players from surrounding communities, hoping there would be enough players to create a new generation of Royals.
The team originally started in 2012, giving girls who aged out of the Unity Minor Ball Association when they turned 19 the opportunity to continue to play softball.
“The communities of Unity and Kindersley joined together in the beginning, giving the team enough players to make a team,” said Woit.
There are two players who will be joining the new crew, Brennae Hofmann and Dacey Francis. Along with 12 new teammates, the team has also secured Brent Weber and Garan Rewerts as coaches on top of Woit and Francis. The team will be sporting new jerseys this year as well, with help from many generous sponsors.
Woit said in the interview with SASKTODAY.ca getting the team organized in time to register the team in time for the season was one of the biggest challenges. At time of publication, Woit had confirmed that the ladies’ team is slated for tournaments in Saskatoon and Regina, with hopes of a couple of exhibition games held in Unity.
