UCHS celebrates athletics at Warrior Night

UCHS Warrior Night provides an opportunity to celebrate and recognize accomplishments and season highlights for senior high Warrior athletes.

UNITY — A season of success stories was celebrated at Unity Composite High School in their second annual Warrior Night. The evening was created two years ago to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of senior high Warrior athletic teams over the past year.

UCHS has teams in 10 senior programs – golf, cross country, football, volleyball, curling, archery, wrestling, basketball, badminton, track and field.

“Throughout the evening coaches presented slide shows of season highlights and shared stories with athletes and guardians in attendance,” says UCHS vice-principal and multi-sport coach Ken Parker.

“It was also an opportunity to thank the efforts of graduating players to which some of the Grade 12 athletes replied by addressing the audience and the teammates they are leaving behind.”

The celebration evening also presented an opportunity for the Warrior senior boys’ basketball team to get a photo with and raise their provincial bronze medal-winning SHSAA banner.

Archery athlete, Sebastian Lauinger was presented a bow from his coach, Ms. Van De Meutter on behalf of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. This was in recognition of his accomplishments in archery which included a provincial gold medal.

The celebration evening doesn’t just recognize Battle West District Championships or SHSAA provincial wins, but all the efforts given by both athletes and coaches into athletic development as well as building citizens.

Also celebrated that evening was the successful hosting of tournaments, which included practising truth and reconciliation with a special flag raising at the UCHS senior girls’ volleyball tournament. The UCHS senior girls’ basketball tournament included a pink game to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The UCHS Warriors football team held a mental wellness awareness and fundraising event in conjunction with their Friday night lights game, which helped fund guest speaker, Mark Black, at a school-wide day dedicated to mental wellness workshops, held in May.

Also highlighted was sportsmanship shown in a video of the UCHS girls’ basketball team during a provincial playoff game. When the Lady Warriors realized they were not winning the match, they provided an opportunity for an injured Grade 12 student from the opposing team to score in her final high school game.
