WILKIE--Wilkie and District Fire Department spokesperson, Dylan Gillespie, said June was a quiet month for them with only one call to a high angle rescue.
The WDFD were also grateful for the firemen’s banquet held in their honour, with all members in attendance, joined by some of their EMS partners. The evening included recognition of retiring members as well as years of service medals and plaques presented.
Gillespie said at present, with summer holiday season upon us, no training is scheduled. There have been no new members join their team and they continue to put a call out for volunteer firefighters to join this division of protective services.
Some summer fire safety tips offered by community fire departments include exercising caution when firing up the grill. Never us a barbecue indoors or in an enclosed space as it is not only a fire hazard but can expose you or your family to dangerous and toxic gases. Keep your barbecue away from combustible objects.
Fireworks are best enjoyed when put on by trained professionals at a community event. If you are planning to use fireworks, ensure a water source is available in case of emergency. Keep the audience a safe distance away and keep sparklers away from children as while they appear like a safe novelty, they are extremely hot and can set clothing ablaze.
If you are going to enjoy a backyard fire pit or campfire, always ensure conditions are not conducive to the fire spreading, keeping away from dry materials, overhanging branches or anything that could ignite easily. Never use gasoline to start a fire and definitely never add it into open flame.
Keep a water source handy in case of emergency and absolutely ensure your campfire is out before leaving it unattended.
