Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau called a federal election for Oct. 30. Battleford-Kindersley constituency candidates were incumbent NDP Rod Thomson of Duprow, Liberal Ed Keller of Leipzig and Conservative Norval Horner of Rosetown.
Bob Low and Linda Maljan of Unity each placed fourth in their respective diving competitions at the Saskatchewan Summer Games, held in Moose Jaw. Linda, 11 years old, was the youngest and smallest competitor at the Games, and was a last-minute replacement for Lyda Clarke, 16, who had sprained her ankle.
The eighth branch of Lakeland Library was opened in Macklin. Residents of Macklin, the RM of Eye Hill and the Village of Denzil could use the library free of charge whereas non-residents would have to pay a $10 fee per family.

Shaylynn Pewapisconias, of Little Pine First Nation, a right winger who played four years with the Unity Lazers under coach Dale Robertson, hung up on a NCAA recruiter thinking it was a scam. However the offer from the Wisconsin Yellowjackets was genuine and Pewapisconias was on her way to play college hockey in the United States, with her education paid for.
With 18 centimetres (over seven inches) of rain falling in just over two hours, Rutland farmer Tim Winterhalt saw large ponds created where slough bottoms had been dry for years. The storm, accompanied by high winds, hail and lightning strikes “too numerous to mention,” was an isolated incident with a neighbouring farmer receiving only one inch of rain, while at Unity less than a quarter-inch was recorded.
West Nile Virus was confirmed to be present in Wilkie, with three birds testing positive for the virus.
