MAJOR — Five 4-H clubs - Kerrobert Multiple, Major Multiple, Handel Multiple, Senlac Multiple and Unity and District Multiple - met in Major to participate in the next level of 4-H public speaking March 2. These five clubs make up the newly merged district, District 54.

Part of the 4-H program is that all members must present a self-authored speech before an audience and a panel of judges at their club level, where the top two move on to district speeches, competing against other clubs in the area. From there, only the first-place winners can move forward to regionals.

This year, the topics ranged from photography to trees to how to bake a cake and audience members were told of tales of some members’ beloved pets such as Dumpster and Candy Cane. Some of the comments the judges gave reflected to the members how well written and spoken the speeches were and how interesting the various topics were.

The winners who will be moving onto regionals will be Lila Kemery (Cloverbud with Major Multiple), Edie Toner (Junior with Handel Multiple), Aiden McGrath (Intermediate with Handel Multiple) and Taylor Ducherer (Senior with Unity and District Multiple).

District speeches looked quite different for all the clubs this year, as Districts 30 and 24 merged this past summer. With lower memberships throughout the province, 4-H Saskatchewan proposed districts with less than 3 clubs merge with a neighbouring district, increasing the number of members in competitions such as speeches and curling. District 24 was made up of clubs from Kerrobert, Major and Handel, while District 30 only had the Senlac and Unity clubs. With the merger, the two districts felt it was fitting that the new district number would be 54.

Regional speeches will be held in Rosetown, April 5, at noon.
