LUSELAND - As the Christmas season nears and we busy ourselves preparing for the upcoming celebrations, I am reminded of how thankful I am for the amazing volunteers and community-minded people that live in our small town of Luseland and surrounding area. So many who stop to lend a hand and help keep community holiday traditions alive.
I’d like to thank Dan Holman, Brent Honecker and the town of Luseland Public Works crew for building our toboggan hill again. This hill is used all winter as a recreational meeting spot for children of all ages. We also gathered there Dec. 10 for the annual Santa Day event put on by the Luseland Development Committee. The committee comprised of council members, business leaders and community-minded citizens continues to put on this event each year in order to create holiday cheer. A show is put on for the kids, sleigh rides and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus are some of the many highlights, followed by a wiener roast at the Luseland Millennium Park.
I’d also like to thank the Luseland Food Bank for the spectacular food drive that they did this Halloween. They collected many boxes of non-perishable food, paper and soap donations and more than $4,100 was raised that day in monetary donations. It is this amazing community support and generosity that warms my heart as we near Christmas. These acts of kindness and donations may seem small but they can make so much difference in the life of someone who is struggling. In these turbulent financial times, I feel assured that Luseland will always help whomever is in need.
Another holiday tradition in Luseland is the memory Christmas light display. Donations of $5 in memory of a loved one can be made at the Delta Co-op Farm Supply. All donations made will go towards the upkeep of Luseland Cemetery.
The town council gathers together to do a light judging contest each holiday season. This year we are going out on Wednesday, Dec. 21 to do our tour. We have a first-place prize of $50, second place, $35, third place, $25 and one for best decorated business for $50. We find the contest helps inspire our citizens to decorate for the holidays and the prizes are in Luseland bucks to encourage local spending.
Let’s also be thankful of our business sector in Luseland. They are always called on, particularly at this time of year to support events through donations. They contribute so much to our local economy and the sustainability of our community. Remember to shop local so we can keep this town thriving and continuing to grow.
Tis the season of peace and goodwill. At this time of year, let us not forget those in our community who may need something as simple as a smile or a little extra help in order to ensure their day is made brighter. On behalf of council and the staff of the town of Luseland, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
