Last game for regular season before high school football playoff quest begins

High school football season will have an exciting finish with multiple teams deadlocked in standings prior to final RS games

UNITY, KERROBERT, MACKLIN — High School football season is short so that’s why teams in the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association league know every game counts in a big way.

In conference six, that includes Kerrobert Rebels, Unity Warriors and Macklin Sabres. The Rebels and Warriors are in a three-way tie with Kindersley Kobras for top spot all sporting 3-1 records heading into their final game of the regular season Oct. 14.

Kerrobert, a 1A six-man team, pulled out a stunning win in the dying seconds of their opening game in Unity, earning a 36.35 victory. The Rebels have lost only to Kindersley and will take on last place Eatonia in their closing regular season game. As of Oct. 9, the Rebels have scored 157 points while having 174 points scored against them.

Macklin Sabres are classed as a 2A team but have struggled this year to put wins on the board and are sitting with a 1-4 record.

Unity Warriors, a 2A six-man team, also sit with a 3-1 record losing only once in a dramatic one-point, last-minute loss to Kerrobert in their season opener. The Warriors play another 3-1 standing team in the Kindersley Kobras on the road Oct. 14. The warriors have generated 212 points scored this season as of Oct. 9 and have had only 81 points scored against them.

Kindersley’s only loss so far this season has been to the Rebels on Oct. 7.

Conference playoffs are set for Oct. 29 with winning teams advancing to SHSAA six-man football semifinals with hopes of earning a provincial berth for Nov. 12.

That leaves teams one game left in regular season to make it count and only a brief time to prepare for the start to playoffs. Home field advantage and conference opponents will be determined after regular season has completed.
