Grip it and rip it; high flying motocross action in Unity

Unity's Route 46 Motocross Club played host to a second Mid-West Am race day on Sept. 10.

UNITY — Dirt bikers from across Saskatchewan congregated in Unity Sept. 10, joining a number of local riders, for the second of two Mid-West Amateur Motocross competition series hosted at the Unity Motocross Track across from the airport.

The track has had a long history and first opened more than two decades ago. A brief lull in activity due to membership decline had a new group of dirt bike enthusiasts resurrecting activity around 2015. In addition to membership for local and nearby community riders, the club hosted a training day and two race days in 2022.

The attraction factor grows every year as club volunteers have dedicated hours to improvements at the venue as well as track maintenance.

Crews spent up to a week prior to race days preparing the track for racers. Organizers maintain it is not just volunteers that deserve a shout out as community sponsors and donors are a key element in ensuring a successful event. Club members and community volunteers ensure the track is not too dry or too wet and that paths are free from obstructions,

The venue became a small village as more than 75 RVs lined the grounds, blended with food trucks, volunteers who provided flagging and race management duties as well as legions of fans who took advantage of the warm, fall day to experience the high-flying action.

The Ganter family have been a mainstay at Unity’s Route 46, with boys as participants and parents and extended family members volunteering and cheering where and when they are able. Local riders say they appreciate the commitment of their families and friends when it comes to event hosting.

Events hosted in the community are always a boost to the local economy as those travelling in are often patrons of local businesses purchasing food, fuel and potentially accommodations.
