WILKIE — Sask. West Hockey League president Joe Cey says week five of the regular season was a busy one, with the Kindersley Klippers in cruise control not incurring a loss to this point, standing at 6-0.
Week five games were played Nov. 25-27. Cey’s hockey knowledge and experience as a player, coach and now league president, and his love of the game is evident in the pride he shares in league weekend updates.
In the Klippers 2-1 win over Biggar, net minder Travis Child was solid stopping 35 of 36 shots on net.
Wilkie Outlaws were on the non-winning end of the Klippers second win of the weekend, as they defeated the Outlaws 7-4, with goaltender, Child, turning away 32 of 36 shots on net. Wilkie D-man Dustin Glackin chipped in with three assists for the Outlaws
The Macklin Mohawks split their weekend games routing Unity Miners 12-2 on Nov. 25 then dropping a hard-fought 5-3 decision to Edam on Nov. 26.
Cey says, “Corey Doetzel, Hunter Steinhubel and Dustin Bast led a well-balanced Mohawk attack against the Miners, peppering Unity’s goal tending tandem of Ryan Rewerts and Brett Vanderveer with 53 shots.”
In the Mohawks Saturday game, veterans Mitch Wall and Cody Danberg of Edam helped power Edam past Macklin. Cey adds that sophomore goalie, Jake Taylor, continued his solid play stopping 34 of 37 shots.
The Kerrobert Tigers were unable to get past the Biggar Nationals at home on Nov. 26 aided by the busiest goaltender in the SWHL, according to Cey. Brett Matlock stopped 34 of 37 shots on net.
“Kerrobert got stellar performances from Brett Neumeier with two goals, and Nik Amundrud turning aside 39 of 45 shots,” said Cey.
The league president enthusiastically affirmed the most exciting, see-saw, game of the weekend took place Nov. 27 in Kerrobert in an overtime win by Hafford. Rylan Freed and Mathew Roblin paced the Tiger attack.
Cey notes that after week five, Jonny Calkins leads the scoring race with 20 points, The top scorers also include Brett Novak of Biggar, Shayne Neigum from Kindersley, and Chris Henry from Biggar.
“The week five player of the week award goes to Jonny Calkins of the Kindersley Klippers for his huge scoring weekend,” says Cey.
The Tigers will finish off the first half of their regular season with four games in December ending for a Christmas break with a game against the Miners in Unity.
The Miners have five games left to play in December with the fortune of holding four of those games on home ice. They will hold their last game before Christmas break Dec. 23 hosting Macklin.
The Outlaws have the biggest December schedule finishing off the first half of regular season with six games, hosting four of those at home. Their last game before Christmas break is Dec. 23 hosting Edam.
The Mohawks play all five December games on the road and will finish off playing Dec. 23 in Unity.
The first game back after holiday break, and kicking off the last half of regular season begins Jan. 6.
Overtime this year is a 3-on-3 five-minute period and if the game is still tied, a shootout is required.
