WILKIE – The U11 Wilkie Brewers made the trek to Gull Lake for provincials July 19 to 21, coming home with the banner.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Sittler, Assistant Coach Rick Cey and helpers Nick Pernitsky and Trent Elder, the team has been practicing for a tournament such as this.
Cey said the team was made up of mostly returning players with four first-time players added to this year’s roster. The tournament saw eight teams divided into two pools, where the Brewers played against teams from Gull Lake, Watrous and Carnduff. With a win-loss record of 2-1 in the round robin, the Brewers advanced to the semifinals to play against the Holdfast Knights.
After defeating the Knights, the Brewers were up against the Rosetown Angels in the finals.
“In the championship game, our outfielders were catching everything that was in the air. The boys were also successful in turning out their first double-play. They had been working on it all season long, so to see it done in the final was amazing to watch,” said Cey.
With many of the team returning next year, Cey is excited to see the team develop even more.
“They were a great team to coach. They listened well and enhanced their fielding, hitting and pitching over the season. It’s amazing to have such a dedicated team and coaching staff,” added Cey.
