Another McLurg student signs as U of S athlete

McLurg HIgh School student, Isaiah Mamer, has signed with the University of Saskatchewan men's volleyball team

UPDATED DEC. 9 at 5 p.m.

WILKIE - Just two weeks after winning a SHSAA provincial boy's volleyball gold medal with his team, the McLurg Broncs, it was announced through University of Saskatchewan social media channels, Isaiah Mamer would be part of the U of S men's volleyball team in the new year.

In the release that accompanied Mamer's picture on their various men's university volleyball social media channels it stated, " Isaiah is a Team Sask Volleyball athlete that will join the Huskies as a skilled outside. His outstanding game sense and work ethic will make him an integral part of the program for years to come."

Mamer has been part of high-performance volleyball teams for some time. He was a member of Team Saskatchewan that competed at the Western Canada Summer Games in 2019. In July of 2021, it was announced that Mamer, as part of the Battlefords Volleyball Club, was invited to be a part of the 2022 Canada Games training group to play with Team Saskatchewan, hoping to crack the provincial roster for the games upcoming in Niagara in August of 2022.

"I was contacted about a year ago by Coach McKay and every since then, we have kept in touch leading to this moment," Mamer tells the Press-Herald/SASKTODAY.ca  "My first reaction to this news was that it was surreal to get the opportunity to play at the next level.  I am so excited to be a part of the Huskies and am looking forward to what the future will bring for me and my team."

Mamer is waiting to hear back from his application for the Kin/Ed program at the U of S.

Sean McKay, Head Coach of the U of S men’s volleyball team was very enthusiastic when responding to our inquiry from the Press-Herald/SASKTODAY.ca on Isaiah Mamer. “We are super excited to have Isaiah join the team. I am also assistant coach with the Canada summer games team.  We’ve gotten to see his drive and work ethic through this program.  Although he is smaller, he works extra hard to keep up with big guys.  His love for game certainly shows.  On January 2nd, players on the extended roster, of the Canada summer games team, which Mamer is currently a part of,  will have the opportunity to tryout to confirm their spot.  He has been training with that group for the last two years.”

Like his siblings, Mamer has been a multi-sport athlete.  He was a member of the Lloydminster Twins baseball team as a pickup player that earned a spot at Western Canadians in 2017, as well as earning a spot on baseball teams that competed at provincials from 2014-2018.  He was also a McLurg Bronc track athlete competing at SHSAA provincials for a number of years.  All of these competitions resulted in some hardware for this Wilkie youth.

Mamer's addition to a U of S athletics team is another success story for McLurg as Treyton Pernitsky was signed with the U of S Track and Field team in 2019, and Kabri Sittler signed with the U of S Ladies Wrestling Team in 2020.  Mamer's brother, Jacob, was part of the U of S Huskies football team from 2018-2020.
